HEADACHES

Key Points:

·          Musculoskeletal headaches are amenable to chiropractic care.

·          Correction of osseous misalignments and release of muscular spasms can relieve these types of headaches.

There are different types of headaches.  But, the types of headaches more amenable to chiropractic care are those caused by osseous misalignments and muscular spasms.  These musculoskeletal types of headaches are usually located at the base of the skull.  They could be triggered by the neck, base of the skull, and upper back being out of alignment, which in turn causes muscular spasms. If the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is out of alignment, it could also cause headaches.

Musculoskeletal headaches are usually relieved by manipulating and realigning the neck, the skull, the thoracic spine, and the TMJ (the jaw).  The involved muscles must also be released.  If the muscles are left in spasm, they could pull the osseous structures out again.  The spasmodic muscles could also trigger pain around the involved areas.  The muscles commonly involved are the upper back and neck muscles.
